How science informs the Enhanced Transparency Framework and the Global Stocktake: future transformation pathways in line with net-zero targets and the Paris Agreement

This official UNFCCC special event, organised by the UNFCCC Transparency Division under the “Together for Transparency” initiative, explores how science can inform the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) and the Global Stocktake (GST). It provides insights into state-of-the-art research on global and national transformation pathways in line with net-zero targets and the Paris Agreement, including perspectives on equity and climate finance, that can help Parties better align their ambition and efforts, both individually and collectively.

Transparency is at the core of the Paris Agreement. The ETF helps Parties build a strong evidence base to support climate policymaking and identify investment needs and opportunities, while the GST allows countries and other stakeholders to take stock of collective progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement. Together with NDCs, they form the foundation for enhancing global ambition in climate action and support over time. The session brings together researchers from two flagship Horizon Europe projects, ELEVATE and NEWPATHWAYS, to present key results on scenarios and pathways that support the design of future NDCs and the implementation of climate policies for the post-2030 period.

Modelling decarbonisation pathways: from global pledges to buildings  and cities

This event brings together evidence for climate action from modelling decarbonisation pathways. It stars by setting the scene with a multi-model analysis that shows that current net-zero pledges bring the world closer to a well-below 2 °C pathway, but an emission gap remains, and increasing ambition is crucial for consistency with the Paris Agreement goals. Then it presents the Climate Policy Modelling Protocol, a comprehensive protocol to translate climate policies on a national level into inputs to integrated assessment models, to model decarbonisation pathways. Finally, it moves to the local scale, exploring the role of sufficiency, efficiency and renewables in the decarbonisation of commercial building stock at city scale.

Speakers: Prof. Dr. Detlef van Vuuren (PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency),          Prof. Dr. Michel den Elzen (PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency), and                          Dr. Usama Bin Perwez (Pakistan National Univsersity of Sciences and Technology)

Moderator: Theofania Troupi (Climate Strategies)

Financing What Matters Most: Delivering National Climate Priorities through Transformational Finance

Building on the COP31 position paper by Transformational Finance for Climate Group, this event explores how transformational finance can address structural barriers, mobilise investment at scale, and generate system-wide impacts to support the NCQG, the Baku-to-Belém Roadmap and the Paris Agreement.

The event will serve as a platform for representatives of governments, international organizations, and public and private financial institutions from both emerging and developed economies to discuss the unlocking of transformational climate finance and removing barriers to climate investments in EMDEs and financing NDCs.
